Representatives from Norway's parliament (Stortinget) met with Mrs. Maryam Rajavi
Mrs. Rajavi highlighted the deplorable human rights situation in Iran, Tehran's meddling in Syria and the need for action regarding the mullahs' nuclear threat
OSLO, Norway, Feb. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In a meeting with members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence in the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget), and representatives from other committees in the Norwegian Parliament, Wednesday, February 26, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran discussed questions related to Iran. Mr. Kristian Norheim, Second Deputy-chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence led the meeting. Mr. Norheim represents the Progress Party, a coalition partner in the government of Norway.
In her remarks before the Norwegian parliamentarians, Mrs. Rajavi elaborated on the deplorable human rights situation in Iran, including the dramatic rise in executions. She said that Hassan Rouhani has been part and parcel of the Iranian regime from Day One and that any notion that he is an actor for reform and moderation would be a mirage. Mrs. Rajavi warned that pinning hope on changes by Rouhani has only emboldened the mullahs to continue their destructive policies.
Mrs. Rajavi stated that Tehran retreated one step from its efforts to attain nuclear weapons only because of social and international pressure. She emphasized that only through a decisive policy by the international community, including tougher sanctions, implementing Security Council resolutions and the additional Protocol, snap inspections and shutting down all of the regime's nuclear sites could one prevent the terrorists ruling Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
While addressing the immediate threats to Camp Liberty, where nearly 3,000 members of the Iranian opposition PMOI/MEK reside, Mrs. Rajavi called for immediate action to ensure the protection and security of Liberty residents, who are protected persons under the Geneva Conventions. This said was indispensable to avert the occurrence of humanitarian catastrophe.
In 2013, forces affiliated with the Iranian regime launched four missile attacks on Camp Liberty.
The Iranian opposition leader said Tehran's relentless support for the Assad dictatorship represented the depth of the Iranian regime's regional strategy.
The members of the Norwegian Parliament shared their views and posed a number of questions to Mrs. Rajavi. They also condemned the flagrant violations of human rights in Iran. Underscoring the need to guarantee the security and protection of Liberty residents, they also stressed upon the responsibility of the international community, including Norway, concerning this urgent humanitarian crisis.
