Companies in the petrochemical and refining industries were the largest purchasers of safety systems in 2006 accounting for three-quarters of all safety systems sold in China. The power, oil & gas, transportation, textile, pharmaceutical, and other industries only account for a quarter of all safety systems sold in 2006.

However, even in the petrochemical and refining industries the use of safety instrumented systems in China remains low. The vast majority of companies interviewed for this study does not perform a hazard and risk analysis on a regular basis and most potential clients still shy away from large investment in safety instrumented systems.
