Rep. Fattah Welcomes British-American Project to 2010 Philadelphia Conference - Back to Its Roots
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 5, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a proud Fellow of the British-American Project, which identifies and promotes young leaders on both sides of the Atlantic, will deliver welcoming remarks tonight to launch the Project's 2010 Conference at the Sheraton Society Hill in Philadelphia.
Fattah, chairman of the Congressional Urban Caucus and just re-elected to his ninth term, was selected as a delegate to the 1989 Conference, and has remained active as a Fellow. The British-American Project held its founding conference in Philadelphia in 1985 and marks its 25th anniversary this weekend by returning to its roots.
"The relationship between our nations is extraordinarily important. The British-American Project performs an invaluable service by bringing together diverse groups of young leaders from each nation for a keen exchange of ideas on vital topics," Fattah said. He has maintained ties with Fellows in both nations and continued contacts with the United Kingdom – including a live interview on the BBC Tuesday night – at midnight Philadelphia time – on the U.S. midterm elections.
The four-day conference, which alternates each November between British and American sites, includes intense discussion on major issues facing each nation and the international community. This year's theme is "Freedom – New and Old." The mission of the BAP is to help maintain and enrich the long-standing relationship between Britain and the United States, whether challenged or celebrated through time.
Executive committees in the U.S. and the United Kingdom each year select up to 24 new delegates, age 28 to 40, with a proven track record of achievement and high future potential. Among prominent Philadelphians attending tonight are Mayor Michael Nutter and Farah Jimenez, a BAP Fellow, who is the new head of the People's Emergency Center.
