Rep. Fattah to be Honored Tomorrow with Congressional Champion of Mentoring Award
WASHINGTON, Jan. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) will be honored for his leadership and support of mentoring with the Congressional Champion of Mentoring Award on Wednesday, January 29. The award, bestowed by MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, honors Members of Congress for their longstanding commitment to mentoring.
Understanding the critical role mentoring plays in students' lives, Congressman Fattah has been a leader in pushing for more federal funding for mentoring programs, as well as increased collaboration between government agencies and mentoring organizations. As Ranking Member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, Fattah has been instrumental in securing appropriations funding to help close the mentoring gap. Fattah's colleague on the committee, Chairman Frank Wolf (R-VA), will also be honored as a Congressional Champion.
In 2012, Fattah forged a groundbreaking agreement to launch a national mentoring program in robotics through the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). The agreement links BGCA with FIRST! to provide STEM opportunities through FIRST's innovative robotics-based programming at Boys and Girls Clubs across the country. Last year, Fattah introduced America's FOCUS Act that would significantly fund youth mentoring programs with corporate fines, penalties, and settlements, and at no cost to the taxpayer.
MENTOR works in collaboration with their Mentoring Partnership Network, and more than 5,000 mentoring programs in all 50 states, to increase the quality and quantity of mentoring relationships for America's youth.
