Rep. Fattah Says AIG Repayment Plan Shows Critics Were Wrong as Obama Cleans Up the Mess He Inherited
WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), Chairman of the Congressional Urban Caucus and Pennsylvania's senior member on the House Appropriations Committee, issues the following statement concerning the announcement today that AIG has reached agreement to repay taxpayers for its bailout loan:
"The Obama Administration continues to make giant strides to clean up the financial mess it inherited, and today's agreement between the Treasury Department and AIG is the latest example. AIG has been a lightning rod for nay-sayers critical of the Troubled Assets Relief Program, the federal loan to General Motors and other bold steps by President Obama and his economic team. The critics and whiners have it wrong: GM is back, stronger than it's been in years. AIG is trimming down, paying back the taxpayers and getting back to its core business: insurance. TARP is now expected to turn a profit. The Obama Team deserves a huge thank-you from the taxpayers and an apology from those misguided or politically motivated critics who thought this day would never come."
