Rep. Fattah Commends ExxonMobil, 3 Other Companies for Their Containment Plan for Gulf Oil Spills
WASHINGTON,, July 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah(D-PA), a member of the House Appropriations Committee's Energy and Water Subcommittee, issued this statement concerning an oil spill containment system announced by four major oil companies.
"Four major Gulf of Mexico competitors of BP – and each other –have taken a smart step toward preparing for a catastrophe we hope will never reoccur. ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips and Shell are to be commended for their partnership in committing $1 billion to a system to contain a deepwater well blowout. In particular ExxonMobil is to be commended for its leadership in this undertaking.
"By setting up the non-profit Marine Well Containment Company, these four industry giants are demonstrating corporate responsibility and preparedness. They have learned a huge lesson from BP's lack of foresight.
"I will be working through the Appropriations Committee, with its responsibilities for the Department of Energy and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration in their oversight of oil drilling safety, to cooperate with this worthwhile endeavor."
