PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top weekly cross-platform entertainment rankings for September 9, 2015.
Universal Pictures had a banner weekend at the global box office with "Straight Outta Compton" topping the worldwide chart with $16.75 million. On top of that, "Minions" crossed the $1 billion mark globally and "Jurassic World" hit the $1 billion mark in international territories, thus raising its global cumulative to a whopping $1.65 billion.
In North American action, the final weekend of the 2015 summer movie season has wrapped, and as Labor Day weekends go this was a slow one, although there were some interesting twists nonetheless. Sony's faith-based drama "War Room" added 391 locations in its second weekend and came out on top with $13.4 million for the four-day Labor Day weekend, bringing its current North American box office total to of $28.7 million after just 11 days in release.
On this week's Movies on Demand chart, director Cameron Crowe's comedy, "Aloha," starring Bradley Cooper takes first, while buddy comedy "Hot Pursuit," starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara lands in second and is once again followed by Lionsgate's YA action-adventure, "The Divergent Series: Insurgent" and Fox's Dreamworks Animation release "Home."
On our digital purchases and rentals chart, Warner Bros.' "Mad Max 4: Fury Road" holds onto the top spot in its second week, while Lionsgate's "Insurgent," now in its fifth week of release, continues to generate interest by maintaining its second place spot. Fox's "Fight Club," which was originally released on DVD in the year 2000 and stars Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, fought its way into the top 20 digital charts, landing a solid punch in thirteenth place.
Our DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales chart has a newcomer at the top of the chart with Anchor Bay's release of "The Walking Dead: Season 5," which dominates this week's top 10. Meanwhile, Fox's Dreamworks Animation family-favorite "Home" moves back to second place after leading the charge last week in its fifth week on the chart.
On the DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals side of the ledger, Warner Bros.' buddy comedy "Hot Pursuit" takes first place in its third weekend on the chart followed by Lionsgate's "The Divergent Series: Insurgent" and Warner Bros.' ever-popular "Get Hard" in third place.
Our top viewer engagement for broadcast telecasts chart shows a repeat of last week with Telemundo's "El Senor de los Cielos" on top once again, followed by Univision's "Lo imperdonable" in the second spot and Telemundo's "Caso cerrado – Edicion especial" in third.
Our top viewer engagement for cable telecasts chart has a newcomer, as AMC's "Fear the Walking Dead" takes the top position, followed by TNT's "Rizzoli & Isles," and in third place, VH1's always-popular "Love & Hip Hop Atlanta."
Finally, on our combined social media and digital engagement chart for viewers of broadcast and cable telecasts, Taraji P. Henson vs. Terrence Howard got BET's "Lip Sync Battle" back to the top as their battle was uploaded to YouTube and gained 265k+ views. Comedy Central's always-popular "Key & Peele" shared a clip of MC Mom on Facebook and the clip had more than 12k+ interactions. On NBC's "America's Got Talent," Heidi, Mel and Howie played a wax figure prank and it was uploaded to YouTube and gained 415k+ views.
