PORTLAND, Ore., March 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top weekly cross-platform entertainment rankings for March 18, 2015.
It was a fairy tale weekend for Disney as the live-action "Cinderella" charmed the global marketplace to the tune of $132.5 million, topping both the North American and the international box office charts. In addition, Walt Disney Animation Studios' Academy Award®-winning "Big Hero 6" became the number one animated title of 2014 with more than $633 million globally. The film, which has earned $221 million domestically, also surpasses $400 million at the international box office this weekend.
Not surprisingly, the DVD and Blu-ray sales and rental charts, as well as our Movies on Demand chart, are all topped by the small screen debut of Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1," which was a massive hit in theaters globally, earning more than $750 million and posting a $121.9 million debut in North America—the biggest opening weekend of any film released in 2014.
On our digital purchases and rentals chart, Disney's "Big Hero 6" climbed to the number one position, now in its fourth week of release. Fox's "Birdman," now in its fourth week of release, continues to demonstrate demand at the number two spot. (Notably, Fox has seven of the top 20 titles for its second week in a row.) Sony's "Whiplash" debuted strong, landing at the third position.
CBS' "NCIS" family wins big on our broadcast TV engagement chart again this week with "NCIS" and "NCIS: New Orleans" at number one and three, respectively, while Telemundo's "Dueños del Paraíso" takes the second spot. Notably, NBC's "The Voice" has a strong showing in the fourth spot.
AMC's ever-popular "The Walking Dead" tops the cable TV engagement chart once again, followed by Hallmark's original series "Good Witch" and Bravo's always talked about "The Real Housewives of Atlanta."
Finally, on our combined social media and digital engagement chart for viewers of broadcast and cable telecasts, several individual performances recapping the blind auditions brought "The Voice" to the top spot. Facebook engagement on the night of Fox's new episode of "Empire" was the lead driver behind the show's second place showing this week.
