Dinosaurs and a new Pixar movie turned the box office inside out as Universal's "Jurassic World" continues its record smashing run with a massive worldwide weekend of $267.1 million, propelling the movie past the $1 billion global mark on Monday in a record 13 days! The movie also posted the biggest second weekend gross ever in North America with $106.6 million.
In more good box office news, Disney/Pixar's "Inside Out" got off to a fantastic start this weekend with a global total of $131.4 million that combines the second biggest North American debut for a Pixar title of $90.4 million plus $41 million from the international territories. Notably, "SPL 2," a Hong Kong-Chinese action movie, took third place worldwide this weekend with $29 million and a to-date total of $40 million.
Lionsgate's teen comedy "The DUFF" rises above to take the top place on our Movies on Demand chart, followed by Warner Bros.' "American Sniper" and "Focus."
Meanwhile, Warner Bros.' "Jupiter Ascending" literally ascends back to number one on our digital purchases and rentals chart. Disney's running flick, "McFarland USA," starring Kevin Costner, debuted strong digitally in its first week of release, coming in at number four.
At the top of our DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Fox's "Kingsman: The Secret Service" guards its place at number one against Warner Bros.' "American Sniper" at number two. On the rentals side, Universal's "Fifty Shades of Grey" dominates the top spot followed by Paramount's kid favorite "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water."
Telemundo's "El Señor de los Cielos" once again tops our viewer engagement for broadcast telecasts chart, followed by the "2015 NBA Finals" on ABC. And on our top viewer engagement for cable telecasts chart, VH1's "Love and Hip Hop Atlanta" battles it out for number one with ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars."
On our combined social media and digital engagement chart for viewers of broadcast and cable telecasts, the "Pretty Little Liars" summer premier kicked off with a bang with more than 147k interactions with a reminder post on Instagram. In the second spot, one of the most popular segments on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "Mean Tweets," was back in action with the NBA Edition posted on Facebook. In third, "America's Got Talent" had an inspiring performance by a young blind dancer named Benjamin Yonattan, whose video earned 797k+ views on YouTube.
