PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top weekly cross-platform entertainment rankings for Jan. 28, 2015.
Warner Bros.' "American Sniper" leads the charge worldwide adding another $81.965 million in 27 territories as it nears the $250 million total mark globally. In the second spot on the global box office chart is Warner Bros.' "Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" with $57.055 million this weekend in 62 territories as it impressively gets within a Hobbit's throw of $900 million total worldwide.
In North America, "American Sniper" continues to impress as it adds another $64.6 million in its second weekend of wide release, crossing the $200 million mark after just 10 days in over 3,500 theaters. In second place, Jennifer Lopez amps up the R-rated fun in Universal's suspense thriller "The Boy Next Door" with $14.9 million in its debut.
In DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales and rentals action, director David Fincher's "Gone Girl" from Fox leads sales while getting a boost from Oscar attention and a much talked about chilling performance from Best Actress nominee Rosamund Pike. On the rentals side of the ledger, Sony's "The Equalizer" with Denzel Washington continues to pummel audiences into submission with its R-rated intensity.
Movies on Demand boasts two very different movies at the top of the chart. At one end of the spectrum is Liam Neeson in Universal's action drama "A Walk Among the Tombstones" and in second place is the acclaimed Golden Globe winner and multiple Oscar nominee, IFC Films' "Boyhood."
On the digital movie purchases and rentals chart, "The Equalizer" holds onto the top spot for the second week in a row while "Gone Girl" remains a strong performer in third place. Brad Pitt in Sony's WWII drama "Fury" enters the chart with a solid second place debut.
New this week on our TV and social media engagement charts, Rentrak's TV viewing intelligence is now paired with ListenFirst's Digital Audience Ratings™, which measure fan engagement with television programs across social media platforms to show which programs are resonating most with audiences.
Our cable TV engagement chart is topped by Hallmark's "A Novel Romance," followed in second by TNT's "Major Crimes" and Bravo's "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" in third.
Meanwhile, Telemundo's always chart-topping "Senora Acero" was knocked to second place only by the pre-Superbowl strength of Fox's NFC Playoff game on our broadcast TV engagement listings.
The top social media activity across broadcast and cable telecasts on our combined chart goes to ABC Family's "Pretty Little Liars" followed naturally by ESPN's "Sports Center."
