PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top weekly cross-platform entertainment rankings for Jan. 21, 2015.
It was a record Martin Luther King Jr. weekend at the box office with "American Sniper" taking in an impressive $117.5 million worldwide—the biggest wide release weekend performance for director Clint Eastwood to-date. "Sniper" also took first place at the domestic box office with $89.3 million for the first three days of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend and a whopping $107 million through Monday.
"Taken 3" lands in the weekend's second place spot worldwide with $45.5 million resulting in nearly $162 million at the global box office so far.
On the domestic chart, behind "American Sniper," the children's classic "Paddington" takes the second spot for the four-day extended weekend with $25.5 million and "The Wedding Ringer" (the R-rated comedy starring Kevin Hart and Josh Gad, which was the second place finisher for the F-S-S portion of the weekend) takes third with a four-day total of $24 million and rounds out the weekend's top three earners.
This was also a record breaking Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in North America with an overall industry gross of $248.5 million through Monday as propelled by the stunning performance of the number one film and solid performances by a host of other titles. The three-day portion brought in an estimated $201.6 million. This beats 2009's record MLK weekend of $231.5 million for the four days and $193.1 million for three-days (including the debut of "Paul Blart: Mall Cop").
This week, Denzel Washington action movie "The Equalizer" knows no equal across the rest of Rentrak's weekly entertainment charts. It holds the number one spot in DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales and rentals, Movies on Demand and digital movie purchases and rentals. The film was a huge hit in theaters when it debuted last September bringing in over $100 million at the domestic box office.
In other DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales and rentals action, "Guardians of the Galaxy" defends its second place position on the sales chart while "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" climbs to the number two spot in rentals.
The second and third place spots in Movies on Demand this week go to "stranger danger" flick "No Good Deed" and Richard Linklater's groundbreaking movie "Boyhood," respectively.
In digital movie purchases and rentals, Brad Pitt's WWII epic "Fury" takes second and "Gone Girl" also refuses to leave the top of the chart, coming in at number three.
Please note: There is no update to the TV & Social Media Engagement chart this week as Rentrak is now partnering with ListenFirst Media to create a new Stickiness Index and Social Media Index. The new report will be available in next week's Cross-Platform Entertainment Rankings.
