PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top weekly cross-platform entertainment rankings for Jan. 15, 2015.
Liam Neeson has a particular set of box office skills and this weekend he used them to full effect, as Fox's "Taken 3" enjoyed a stellar weekend, grossing $92.7 million at the worldwide box office! Following its international weekend debut, "Taken" brought in another $41 million in 36 territories, bringing its total international earnings to $52.3 million. The good showing continued domestically, when "Taken 3" made its North American debut in 3,594 locations and earned an impressive $40.4 million.
Speaking of North America, a five percent uptick on Saturday shows that "Taken 3" is generating great word of mouth. The "Taken" franchise keeps Neeson in his sweet spot and his kick-butt, take-no-prisoners attitude continues to resonate strongly with audiences. "Taken 2" opened in October 2012 to $49.5 million (total: $139.8 million) and the first installment back in 2009 opened over SuperBowl weekend with $24.7 million, taking audiences by storm and winding up with a huge multiple at $145 million in total North American revenue.
Also of note from this weekend, Paramount expanded the acclaimed awards season favorite, "Selma," from 22 theaters last weekend to 2,179 locations this weekend in North America, earning $11.3 million and $13.6 million to-date.
In DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales and rentals action, the two charts look identical in the top two spots with newcomer "The Equalizer" from Sony and its closest rival, "Guardians of the Galaxy," leading the charge simultaneously in both sales and rentals for the week.
Movies on Demand sees a newcomer at the top of the chart as Denzel Washington proves his box office muscle on the big screen and the small screen with the number one debut of the R-rated action film "The Equalizer." The R-rated family comedy "This Is Where I Leave You," starring the prolific Jason Bateman and Tina Fey, follows in second place.
In digital movie purchases and rentals, David Fincher's well-reviewed "Gone Girl," starring Ben Affleck, takes the top spot with YA epic "The Maze Runner" landing in second.
Our cable TV engagement chart sees a three-week domination by TNT's "Major Crimes" followed again this week by Bravo's "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" in the second spot.
Meanwhile, Telemundo's always popular "Señora Acero" and Univision's "Mi corazón es tuyo" land a one-two punch at the top of our broadcast TV engagement listings.
The top social media activity across broadcast and cable telecasts on our combined chart goes to NBC's "One Direction: The Special" followed by BBC America's "Doctor Who."
