The global phenomenon that is "The Hunger Games" continues with the latest installment "Mockingjay, Part 1" launching in 85 international markets this weekend on 17,000 screens. This is the biggest day-and-date release of the year and Lionsgate's widest release ever. With an international weekend total of $154.2 million plus the North American debut of $121.9 million, the worldwide combined total is an impressive $276.1 million.
In DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales and rentals action Fox's animated "How to Train Your Dragon 2" was number one in sales with Disney's "Maleficent" coming in second, while the superheroes of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" topped rentals with Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules" muscling its way into second.
Movies on Demand features two summer hits in the top spots, with Melissa McCarthy's comedy "Tammy" and Angelina Jolie's "Maleficent" at the head of the pack. Digital movie purchases and rentals also had "Maleficent" at the number one position followed by "A Most Wanted Man" starring the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman.
"The Walking Dead" is very much alive as it continues to engage viewers on cable and on social media, while Telemundo's "Senora Acero" and CBS' "Bluebloods" made it a one-two punch on our Broadcast Telecast Top Viewer Engagement chart.
