PORTLAND, Ore., April 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top weekly cross-platform entertainment rankings for April 8, 2015.
Audiences around the globe got furious in movie theaters as Universal's "Furious 7" put the box office into high gear and smoked a massive international weekend of $240.4 million. This is Universal's highest grossing international weekend by a mile, beating the previous record holder "Fast & Furious 6" and its $162 million debut. Combined with the North American April opening weekend record gross of $147.2 million, the worldwide total for the latest installment in the "Fast and Furious" franchise is already nearing $400 million and will likely be the first of the series to top the $1 billion mark globally.
Once again, newcomers dominate DVD and Blu-ray sales this week with Warner Bros.' epic Middle-earth saga "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" taking first place, Disney's live-action musical "Into the Woods" in second and Universal's WWII true story "Unbroken" landing in third. On the DVD and Blu-ray rentals side of the ledger, Disney's animated favorite "Big Hero 6" leads the charge this week followed by box office hit "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" and Universal's comedy sequel "Dumb And Dumber To" in third place.
On our digital purchases and rentals chart, Paramount had a stellar week with its film "Interstellar," which makes its debut at number one. Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," now in its fifth week of release, continues to sit high on the charts in the third spot. Notably, Warner Bros.' "The Hobbit: Battle Of The Five Armies" lands in the seventh position.
Fox's music industry hit drama "Empire" tops our broadcast TV engagement chart this week as Univision's telenovela "Mi Corazon es tuyo" grabs the second position, followed by Telemundo's telenovela "Duenos del paraiso."
The zombies of AMC's "The Walking Dead" maintain their long-time stranglehold at the top of the cable TV engagement chart, followed by Bravo's reality hit "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" and the ABC Family teenage drama series "Pretty Little Liars."
On our combined social media and digital engagement chart for viewers of broadcast and cable telecasts, NBC's singing competition "The Voice" continued its battle rounds, staying at the top, while Fox's "Empire" ended its stellar season on a high note at number two with all social media networks buzzing over the finale. Taking the third spot on our list is ESPN's "SportsCenter," which reacted to Steve Nash's retirement announcement by uploading a photo of him on Instagram, noting his third place rank on the all-time NBA assists list.
