PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Rentrak (NASDAQ: RENT), the leader in precisely measuring movies and TV everywhere, today announced the top 20 digital movie purchases and rentals of the year based on consumer transaction rate. The report includes Internet Video on Demand (iVOD) and electronic sell-through (EST), for both standard-definition and digital HD movie purchases and rentals.
Disney's "Frozen," which won an Oscar® for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year, took the top spot as the number one digital download of 2014. Lionsgate's "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" landed at the number two position. Overall, Warner Brothers ranked as the number one studio for movies purchased and rented digitally in 2014.
"Electronic sell-through (EST) and Internet Video on Demand (iVOD) saw noteworthy growth in 2014 with EST demonstrating the largest year-over-year sales of over 30 percent, largely driven by the great theatrical movies made available by the studios; the continued growth of Ultraviolet (UV), which now has more than 21 million UV consumer accounts (up from 15 million at the end of 2013); and also the studios making more titles available early for purchase on EST," says Chris Roberts, Rentrak's senior vice president of sales of OnDemand Everywhere™.
According to the company's Digital Download Essentials Industry™ service, the top 20 purchased and rented movies, per data collected from weeks ending Jan. 5 to Dec. 28, 2014, are below.
