MCLEAN, Va., June 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Rem Rieder has been named media editor of USA TODAY. Rieder, formerly editor and senior vice president of American Journalism Review, has been writing a weekly media column for USA TODAY since December. The announcement was made today by David Callaway, editor-in-chief of USA TODAY.
"The increasing role of media in all our lives means that every company is now a media company, and everyone a media personality," said Callaway. "Rem's role will include working with media columnists such as Michael Wolff, and USA TODAY reporters across the country as they cover the empires and innovators behind this evolution. He will continue writing his column as well."
As editor and senior vice president of American Journalism Review, Rieder edited the magazine and wrote frequent columns on media issues for the magazine's website, ajr.org. AJR is a national magazine based at the University of Maryland that covers all aspects of digital, print and broadcast journalism.
Prior to that, he held senior editing positions at a number of major newspapers, including the Washington Post (deputy metropolitan editor), Miami Herald (national editor and city editor) and Milwaukee Journal (assistant managing editor/news). He also has served as executive editor of States News Service in Washington D.C.; managing editor of the Trenton Times in New Jersey; reporter, Washington correspondent and deputy metro editor at the Philadelphia Bulletin; and reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Rieder has taught media industry reporting, journalism ethics, magazine editing and production, and advanced public affairs reporting at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. A Philadelphia native, he is a graduate of Harvard University and lives in Washington, D.C.
