Reiter & Walsh ABC Law Centers Establishes Reiter HIE Research Fund to Support Birth Injury Research at the University of Michigan
Advancing neonatal-perinatal medicine is a core pillar of the practice at Reiter & Walsh ABC Law Centers.
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Nov. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Time is of the essence when a newborn baby's brain is deprived of oxygen. To accelerate critical research in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a neonatal brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation and limited blood flow to a baby's brain, Reiter & Walsh ABC Law Centers has established the Reiter HIE Research Fund. The fund supports the University of Michigan's cutting-edge research in pediatric hypoxic-ischemic brain injuries, with the goal of mitigating and preventing the long-term health effects of HIE.
A key to helping newborns with HIE is advancing clinical and laboratory research on essential treatments and therapies. The research of Dr. John Barks, Director of the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, has been instrumental in developing what is now the standard treatment for HIE. Dr. Barks continues to direct his efforts toward discovering safer and more effective treatment protocols. "Under the leadership of Dr. Barks, Michigan Medicine is at the forefront of innovation and discovery in HIE research," remarked managing partner Jesse Reiter. "The Reiter HIE Research Fund will help Michigan Medicine continue to lead the way in treatment and care."
The Reiter HIE Research Fund provides critical momentum to Dr. Barks' research in developing new and combination therapies for HIE. Investigations are underway to determine the safety and effectiveness of the different types of hypothermia therapy, the circumstances under which this therapy is most beneficial, how complications can best be managed, and whether combining treatments can improve outcomes for children with birth injuries.
Charitable participation in the community is a core pillar of the practice at Reiter & Walsh ABC Law Centers, and the firm is thrilled to support the University of Michigan's commitment to providing best-in-class care to injured and sick newborn infants.
