SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Aug. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Angel MedFlight Worldwide Air Ambulance and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) will launch the second class in their healthcare educational series with the August presentation of "Traumatic Injuries, Decision Making and Windows of Opportunity." Led by RIC's Director of Global Patient Services, Rebecca Brashler, LCSW, the session will premiere this week at the Arizona Chapter meeting of Case Management Society of America (CMSA) in Scottsdale, Ariz. Certified case managers in attendance will receive continuing education credits for their participation.
The curriculum will focus on the formidable challenges surrogates face when attempting to honor the wishes of an injured patient and will present guidelines for counseling families in the absence of an advance directive. Following traumatic injuries, case managers are often called upon to assist family members with complex decision-making regarding medical treatment options and discharge planning.
Caring for families at their most vulnerable moments takes both skill and compassion. The class will outline several approaches frequently recommended during ethics consultations, including value clarification, windows of opportunity for treatment, and time-limited trials of therapy in rehabilitation Centers of Excellence. Class participants will also learn strategies for evaluating appropriate post-acute care facilities and coordinating air ambulance transfers. Access to air medical transportation can be vital because it expands patient care options by reducing distance barriers to out-of-area specialty facilities.
"We are proud to offer this educational series with RIC," Jason Siegert, President and Chief Operating Officer of Angel MedFlight, said. "Providing care management professionals with strategies to advise and assist families in challenging situations strengthens the patient support network. Those who attend the class will benefit from Rebecca Brashler's extensive experience and valuable insight."
The educational series is a result of an ongoing collaboration between Angel MedFlight and RIC. This class has been pre-approved by the Commission for Case Manager Certification to provide continuing education credit to certified case managers (CCMs).
