Regional Medical Center at Memphis elected to implement a perioperative system as part of its strategic planning to ensure that its EHR infrastructure was positioned for meaningful use success under the requirements of the HITECH Act. Goals of the perioperative implementation project included managing costs, improving technology support for clinical workflows, eliminating manual processes, and creating a complete, fully automated perioperative record that was interoperable with the hospital's other IT systems.
Regional Medical Center at Memphis' implementation includes:
- A comprehensive solution to schedule and document patients throughout each step of pre-, intra-, and post-surgical process to improve efficiency and quality of care.
- An automated anesthesia information management system (AIMS) to improve accuracy and completeness of the anesthesia record
- A role-based analytics tool to promote optimized performance and improved perioperative outcomes through drill downs to a granular level of detail
- An integrated tissue-tracking and management solution to standardize processes and accurately track and document tissues
"We saw a gap between where we were previously and where we needed to be," said Robert Sumter, Ph.D., Chief Operating Officer and Chief Information Officer at Regional Medical Center at Memphis. "We were impressed by SIS' deep perioperative expertise, solutions offerings, and proven partnership with our new Soarian EHR from Siemens. As we looked at all the payment reform and meaningful use requirements facing our organization going forward, the OR is of critical importance to us, and SIS has proven to be an invaluable team member in assisting us to successfully implement a solution that will assist us in our goals to reduce costs and improve quality care."
"There was no question that we needed to look at perioperative systems from a comprehensive systems standpoint," added Jeffrey Blalack, M.D., Chief of Anesthesia at Regional Medical Center at Memphis. "As clinician managers, we fully recognize the need to become more efficient, to use our time more effectively, and to make more progress refining our workflow processes," Dr. Blalack said. "The combination of the SIS perioperative and AIMS solutions on a single database, with the power of SIS Analytics, gives us the tools we need to improve OR operations and better support our physicians, nurses, and other clinicians, in their day-to-day patient care delivery."
Since the SIS "go-live," Drs. Sumter and Blalack report clinicians and staff members in the perioperative department have expressed strong satisfaction with the new system, and are impressed with its capabilities and ease of use.
"Working with Regional Medical Center at Memphis to quickly implement the SIS solution shows what can happen when exemplary strategic and implementation plans are put into action by a talented team," said Ed Daihl, SIS's Chief Executive Officer. "The hospital's leaders should be commended for their exceptionally efficient and effective implementation process. This implementation also reflects our commitment to our clients to assure that implementations are delivered on time and on budget."
