According to RefluxMD founder Bruce Kaechele, gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is at epidemic levels today. "Over 75 million adults in the US experience heartburn, chest pain, or regurgitation monthly, while 50 million experience symptoms several times each week." According to the Department of Health and Human Services, hospitalizations with a diagnosis of GERD increased by 200% from 1998 to 2005. "No one had addressed this escalating problem," said Kaechele, "We searched for a quality GERD-friendly diet program without success, so we took a year and wrote our own. Our goal was to offer a natural and healthy alternative to the failing status quo treatment plan."
Today, the predominant model to treat acid reflux disease is proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication. This treatment model has failed to slow the growth of this disease or its complications such as Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer. The FDA warns that the long-term use of PPIs is associated with decreased calcium absorption, leading to bone fractures, decreased absorption of magnesium leading to hypomagnesaemia and heart arrhythmias, increased incidence of pneumonia, and increased incidence of Clostridium difficile infections. Recently researchers at Houston Methodist and Stanford University found that regular PPI use increases the risk of a heart attack between 16% and 21% compared to adults not taking PPIs. GERD experts agree that treating acid reflux disease with diet and weight management, along with lifestyle changes, is a more desirable and safer treatment model for many sufferers.
RefluxMD's Recipe for Relief was designed using the DASH diet, which was created in the 1990s by the National Institute of Health working closely with nutritionists, physicians, and dieticians across the country. More recently, a team of 22 nutrition and weight loss experts evaluated the top 41 diet plans for the US News and World Report Annual Diet Rankings. For the fifth year in a row, the DASH diet was selected as the #1 Best Diet for Healthy Eating. With the DASH diet as its foundation, RefluxMD's Recipe for Relief is both effective and healthy, while offering a much safer alternative to daily PPI use for the many adults suffering from GERD.
