Reda Hicks, Diamond McCarthy Partner, Wins Prestigious American Bar Association Environmental Award

HOUSTON, Jan. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Diamond McCarthy LLP is proud to announce Reda Hicks, a partner in its Houston office, has been selected as one of twelve recipients of the 2013 ABA Distinguished Environmental Advocates Award.

The award, given by the American Bar Association's Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER) recognizes members who are major contributors to the development of law, policy, and programs in the areas of energy and the environment. Award recipients are lawyers under the age of 36 or in practice fewer than five years whose accomplishments are above and beyond those of their peers, and are deserving of recognition. They are leaders whose contributions to NGOs, communities, neighborhoods, the government, academia, and the practice of law are significant and belie their years and experience, and represent the "best of the best" in service to the bar, the environment, and communities.

Since 2005, Diamond McCarthy has led a multinational team of lawyers in representing the Provincial Government of Marinduque, Philippines—a small impoverished island in the center of the Philippine archipelago—against former and current multinational mining companies for over 30 years of mining-related environmental damage sustained by the island.  The Marinduque Team, including Reda, has taken the Province's case from Nevada state court all the way through a writ to the U.S. Supreme Court, and back through the state court system to the Nevada Supreme Court.

In addition to work on the Province's case, Reda has done considerable NGO and community stakeholder engagement on mining-related issues at the grassroots, national, and international level.  Her work on mining issues afforded Reda the opportunity to work with policy-makers in the Philippines on crafting sustainable mining law.

Reda is also being honored for her contributions to environmental scholarship, and her community commitments, including work on the development of two green spaces through Leadership Houston, and work on behalf of military families through the Military Spouse JD Network.

Reda will be presented with this prestigious award during SEER's 42^nd Annual Spring Conference on March 22, 2013 in Salt Lake City, UT.
