WASHINGTON, Feb. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In his Chairman's Corner column posted on Recovery.gov Tuesday, Chairman Earl E. Devaney of the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board calls for more extensive reporting of Recovery spending.

Devaney said there is "a quiet revolution afoot" in government because of the move for greater transparency of information on program spending. For years, he said, that data "was buried in the bowels of government," available only to those lucky few who stumbled onto it or went through the lengthy process of filing Freedom of Information Act requests.
"There's no need to file an FOIA request to get what you want from the Recovery Board. Just comb through this website and you'll find plenty of information on spending and award data from recipients of stimulus funds and federal agencies that have issued contracts, grants, and loans," Devaney said.
But he said the Recovery.gov website is not able to provide as much information as he would like.
"Even with all of our innovations, taxpayers would be better served if we could track the money even more thoroughly," Devaney said. "Under guidance written by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), we can trace funds to the prime and sub-recipients but in most instances, we can't go deeper."
Devaney said he agreed with Gary Bass, the founder and executive director of the non-profit OMB Watch, said that more detailed reporting is needed, not just for Recovery spending but for all government spending programs.
