Recognition During Business Recovery
Emerge180 Advice on how to Energize Change
TAMPA, Fla., July 9, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Communicate why changes are being made. Let the insights and opinions of employees be heard. Explain that the process requires "buy in" from everyone. Encourage managers and team leaders to seek feedback regarding cutbacks and reassignments designated as key to a successful reorganization. Set the example as owner or CEO by tightening your own belt.

Praise achievement
Long-term success and character go hand in hand. John Luther has said, "Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are to some extent a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece—by thought, choice, courage and determination." Look for good performance from your leaders and their teams. What have they achieved that you can praise? Company meetings and newsletters provide an easy place to applaud the achievers.
Identify what you can affirm
Name the people on the team. No leader succeeds in a vacuum. Each person matters. A picture of the group can be posted. As much as is reasonable get to know a bit more about the people. For some, this may be as simple as learning their names. For smaller businesses, it may involve more than name recognition.
Be specific about encouragement.
Did they cut costs? Did they find a way to complete tasks in a more efficient and time-saving way? If they have brought new clients in, thank them in person. A handwritten note, even a short one, from the owner or president acknowledges the specific contribution and helps cement commitment to the plans for recovery.
Express confidence that they can continue to excel
It's one thing to finish a sprint. It's another to keep up the energy and performance over the long haul. Design monthly or quarterly recognition. Have a yearly celebration tailored by the goal of minimizing expenditures. Scale back if holiday parties have been the norm, without eliminating the event.
Use lower budget rewards. Rather than expensive banquets or outings simplify. Above all let people their good performances are noted and acknowledged.
Larry Bossidy, the CEO of Allied Signal says, "I am convinced that nothing we do is more important than hiring and developing people. At the end of the day you bet on people, not on strategies." So while streamlining and restructuring may be necessary, the success of all the plans comes back to the people.
