Recirculating Farms Coalition Executive Director Named In 2017 Grist 50
The Grist 50 list highlights "exceptional people working toward a sustainable world"
NEW ORLEANS, March 22, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Marianne Cufone, Executive Director of the Recirculating Farms Coalition was named one of the 2017 Grist 50 – the list announced yesterday, features "exceptional people working toward a sustainable world."
"I am so honored and excited to be on the second ever Grist 50 List," Cufone said. She continued, "I love that Grist highlights people working hard to make our world a better place – this is so important, especially now when our current political climate is creating more challenges."
The organization Cufone leads, Recirculating Farms Coalition, is a national non-profit that supports communities in growing affordable, local, fresh food and creating stable green jobs by building eco-efficient, recirculating farms. A recirculating farm uses continuously recycled water in place of or in addition to earth, to grow plants and raise fish through hydroponics (just plants), on-land aquaculture (just fish) or aquaponics (fish and plants). The Coalition offers farmer trainings; free exercise, cooking and gardening classes; works with schools, disabled veterans and the homeless on nutrition and growing; and advocates for local, state and federal laws and policies that support farming.
Recently, Cufone and other public interest lawyers initiated another notable organization to defend rights related to the natural and human environment – Green Justice.
Cufone said, "We plan to work hard at Green Justice so that one of us will earn a spot on a future Grist 50 list as well!"
Each year, Grist searches for the most inspiring innovators and do-ers working on fresh solutions to the planet's biggest problems. The result is a collection of 50 leaders who are building a sustainable world that works for everyone. Solutions come in many shapes and sizes: exciting technologies, smart campaigns, forward-thinking legislation, innovative products, courageous organizations. As do solutionaries: entrepreneurs, comedians, farmers, activists, scholars, scientists, and more. The Grist 50 shows what a vibrant, diverse sustainability movement looks like. Last year's inaugural list reached and inspired nearly 6 million readers.
