Real Solutions for Fighting Malaria in Africa

WASHINGTON, April 12, 2012  /PRNewswire/ -- As a leader in the development of sustainable, African-led health systems, Accordia Global Health Foundation launched a campaign in preparation for World Malaria Day on April 25 to highlight Africa's malaria burden as well as emerging locally-proven solutions, like those proposed by Dr. Kamija Phiri of Malawi—Accordia's 2012 Merle Sande Award recipient. Despite the many control measures over the decades, malaria continues to be the leading cause of death for children under the age of five in sub-Saharan Africa.

You've Just Been Bitten Campaign
The campaign raises awareness about malaria by inviting participants to test their knowledge about the disease and take action by spreading the word and supporting Accordia's training programs in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Merle Sande Award recognizes malaria expert, Dr. Kamija Phiri
Each year, Accordia celebrates African health leadership by presenting the Merle Sande Award – an award that honors an emerging African leader contributing to the field of infectious disease. On April 19, in Kampala, Uganda, Accordia will recognize Dr. Kamija Phiri, Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research at the University of Malawi College of Medicine, for his outstanding work on investigating new strategies to prevent malaria and severe anemia, one of malaria's most common and devastating complications in children.  Dr. Phiri will deliver a keynote address entitled The Hidden Danger for Children Recovering from Severe Malaria.
