Edit your wardrobe. Take a look at your clothes and sort them into three categories: what you wear most; least; or never. Donate the clothing you haven't worn in one year or more, as well as anything that no longer fits. If an item is damaged beyond repair, it's time to toss it out. When you wear something, return it to the closet with the hanger facing out; at the end of the year, you'll know which items you've never worn (now donate them!)
Choose the right hanger. Your closet will look neater if you use just one type of hanger. In fact, you can actually double your closet space with slimline hangers that are flocked to keep clothing from slipping. Indents hold straps in place and accessory bars securely hold belts, scarves, or ties. Plus, a built-in hook allows the hangers to cascade, saving you even more space. Choose from five colors – black, blue, stone, brown, and sage.
Arrange folded items. When folding clothing you'll store on shelves, place heavier items at the bottom of the pile. Arrange garments by function (workout tops together, business tops together, etc.) and color (white to nude to bright colors to black). If your closet doesn't have shelves, consider using part of your clothing rod for a Sweater Organizer and use Real Simple Solutions Storage Bins that fit inside the shelves. If you have a taller closet, hang it lengthwise; if it's wider, use the side hinge to flip up the bottom shelves so they lay side-by-side. The four stretchy side pockets can store belts, scarves, purses, or other small accessories. Creative uses can include: put in the mudroom and assign one section to each family member; organize your child's outfits for each day of the week; or hang it in the pantry and stock with entertaining supplies such as napkins, place mats, and plastic dinnerware.
Put your purses away. A Hanging Purse Organizer is multi-functional – not only does it allow you to store your bags of multiple sizes in a safe, space-saving manner – you can also fill the shelves with rolled beach or bath towels or stock the organizer with linens and hang it in a guest room closet. If you have children, you can organize their toys and equipment – since the organizer uses elastic, it's safe for little fingers.
Pick a system for storing shoes. Stow shoes you don't wear frequently in labeled plastic boxes on a high shelf, in another closet, or under your bed. For your everyday shoes, use a sturdy shoe and boot organizer for easy access. The Real Simple Solutions Shoe and Boot Organizer can hold 18 pairs of shoes in the pockets, plus two pairs of boots. There are also eight stretchy side pockets to store accessories like scarves, belts, bags, or flip-flops.
