Ready! Set! Save! Students Set for Another Year of Learning, Saving with Student-Run Credit Unions
PLYMOUTH, Mich., Sept. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- With the start of a new school year comes the opportunity for students to start learning to save for the future by participating in student-run credit unions, sponsored by Community Financial Credit Union.
This year, Community Financial team members are running credit unions in 36 local schools, helping students learn to save, as well as other skills for the future.
Operated in partnership with local elementary, middle and high schools in Plymouth, Canton, Novi, Northville, Gaylord, Hillman and Lewiston, the credit unions provide students with a hands-on credit union experience emphasizing the importance of saving money and financial responsibility, as well as career skills.
"It is never too early for students to become financially literate and learn other professional skills to help them in the future," said Natalie McLaughlin, Community Financial education partnership coordinator. "We are proud to be able to help set them on the right path for success, financially and professionally, down the road."
Throughout the year, a team of dedicated Community Financial staff works with students on professional skills like interviewing to cement these concepts
During the 2011-12 school year, the student-run credit unions served over 1,900 students and over 800 student volunteers helped their peers learn the to save money. At the end of the school year, in June, the credit unions held nearly $870,000 in total on deposit from students who have participated over the years.
