CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Affordable Care Act's (ACA) employer mandate requires businesses with over 50 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees to provide health insurance or pay a penalty (employer shared responsibility payment) on federal tax returns. Small businesses with 50-99 FTEs will need to start insuring workers by 2016. Those with 100 or more must begin providing health benefits to at least 70% of their FTEs by 2015 and 95% by 2016.
The employers will use information about their number of employees and hours of service during 2014 to determine whether they are considered an applicable large employer (ALE) for 2015. Health care tax credits have been retroactively available to small businesses with 25 or less full-time equivalent employees since 2010.
