RD Legal Funding Can Fast-Track Payment of NFL Concussion Plaintiffs' Attorney Fees
CRESSKILL, N.J., Dec. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear arguments from objectors to the settlement the National Football League (NFL) reached with former players over the concussion issue. Players who have been waiting on receiving compensation will finally be able to collect their award. In addition, plaintiffs' attorneys who represented them will finally receive their fees. While this is good news for all parties involved, a possible delay in payment might continue to ensue. In light of this news, RD Legal Funding is ready to advance a portion of the fees plaintiffs' attorneys are expecting to receive from their NFL cases.
Roni Dersovitz, Founder of RD Legal Funding says, "I know the plaintiffs' attorneys on this case have been waiting years to receive their compensation, and now that the Supreme Court has dealt with the final set of appeals, plaintiffs' attorneys will be able to collect their fees after fighting so hard and long for their clients. As a former plaintiffs' attorney, I know how important it is to take your wins and focus on your next case. Our Fee Acceleration product allows them to do that by providing them a portion of their fee from this case."
The settlement the NFL reached with its former players has been through the legal gauntlet. The initial $785 million settlement was sent back for being too low by U.S. District Court Judge, Anita Brody. On April 2015, Judge Brody gave final approval of the settlement, but then appeals from objectors halted compensation for the former players and their representatives. Now that the Supreme Court decided not to hear the case and effectively upheld the settlement, payment to the plaintiffs and their attorneys can begin.
The chronicle of the NFL concussion story was displayed by Hollywood in 2015. In the movie Concussion, Will Smith played Dr. Bennet Omalu, who founded and publicized what is now known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). That film illustrated the struggle Omalu had to endure while investigating the link between concussions and playing professional football. The issue of concussions has been long-standing in the NFL. Over the years reports from medical professionals about concussions in professional football increased coverage from the media on the issue, and the rash of suicides and violent incidents involving former players in the league increased the spotlight on the issue. Those factors and other variables played a part in the settlement reached by the NFL and its former players.
