Raytheon to award grants to K-12 teachers nationwide to support STEM education
MathMovesU® award and grant programs recognize teachers for innovative teaching methods
WALTHAM, Mass., Jan. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) will recognize K-12 teachers across the country for their commitment to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education through scholarships and grants to support their work in the classroom and foster ongoing professional development.
Raytheon's MathMovesU® program is inviting all members of the community to recognize inspirational math teachers and coaches for their dedication to improving math education with a MathMovesU Math Hero Award. The annual award's call for nominations is open through May 15, 2013. From the pool of nominees, MathMovesU will honor 32 math professionals with awards of $2,500 each, along with a matching grant of $2,500 to each of their schools.
Raytheon is also announcing that the 2013 application cycle is open for the Raytheon-Engineering is Elementary® (EiE) Teacher Scholarship Program. Awards of $3,000 each will be granted to selected elementary school teachers nationwide whose applications best demonstrate innovative methods of generating student enthusiasm for engineering concepts. Offered through the Museum of Science, Boston, Engineering is Elementary is a professional development program that helps elementary school educators bring engineering to life in the classroom. EiE's teacher training workshops and curriculum resources have reached more than 44,000 teachers and 3.9 million students.
Raytheon's MathMovesU program also is accepting submissions through Friday, Feb. 8, for its Middle School Scholarship and Grant Program. To participate, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students nationwide must demonstrate an enthusiasm for math and the ability to illustrate the importance of math in space exploration by answering the question, "Mission to Mars: How does MATH drive your curiosity?" Up to 150 students will be awarded STEM "camperships" of up to $1,000, or college scholarships of $1,000. In addition, the students' schools will receive matching grants of $1,000 to be used for math-related programs.
