Raytheon Earns 2010 InfoWorld Green 15 Award for Sustainability Initiatives
WALTHAM, Mass., April 23, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) was named to IDG's InfoWorld Green 15 for its information technology (IT)-driven energy solutions that saved the company $17.4 million in 2009, and that enabled it to leverage IT to improve business processes and operations. This is the second consecutive year InfoWorld recognized Raytheon for its sustainability efforts.
"Raytheon's green IT program is a core component of the company's broader sustainability effort and is a great example of how IT can support our overall corporate responsibility initiatives," said Rebecca Rhoads, Raytheon vice president and chief information officer. "Our sustainability program is driven by employee collaboration and innovation across businesses, functions and geographies."
Ted Samson, senior analyst at InfoWorld explained, "This year's crop of Green 15 winners demonstrates how organizations of all sizes are finding innovative ways to use information technology to achieve critical and often complementary environmental and business objectives. Increasingly, companies are moving beyond out-of-the-box products and siloed approaches to making IT itself greener. Rather, they are leveraging technology as part of a broader, holistic effort to make operations as a whole greener."
One example of Raytheon's green IT efforts was a project focused on the United States' McMurdo Station in Antarctica. A team created a system that enabled Raytheon employees in Colorado to remotely monitor and adjust the temperature at the facility in Antarctica. The project reduced fuel consumption by 50,000 gallons in 2009 alone. The project also leveraged Raytheon's internal networking platform to foster ongoing collaboration among the diverse team that spearheaded the project.
Companies around the world have embraced green technology to drive projects and develop products aimed at boosting energy efficiency, trimming waste and reducing or eliminating the use or the production of harmful substances. The InfoWorld Green 15 awards recognize the 15 most innovative IT initiatives that fall under this umbrella of sustainability.
