Rasmussen College Honors American Heroes During National Police Week

BLOOMINGTON, Minn., May 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Rasmussen College will join the nation in recognizing the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement officers during National Police Week, May 13-19, 2012. Every year, an average of 164 police officers make the ultimate sacrifice for our safety. On May 15, Peace Officers Memorial Day, the names of the 163 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2011 were added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C.  To date, 19,660 names have been engraved on the national memorial. In conjunction with this event, Rasmussen College will be hosting events in our campus communities by recognizing the families of these fallen officers.

There are currently more than 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers now serving in the United States, which is the highest figure to date. Rasmussen College helps to educate thousands of future law enforcement officials through its School of Justice Studies.

"Every day, thousands of officers leave their families to go out and protect people they don't even know. Some of them never make it back home," said Rasmussen College Senior Dean of Academic Programs, Matt Petz. "At Rasmussen College, many of our students in our School of Justice Studies are working to become future law enforcement officials, and many of our Justice Studies faculty are active or retired members of local, state, and federal police forces. Police Week is a time where we can say thank you to all of our local heroes for the work and support they have provided in our communities."

As a tribute and thank you to those who serve our communities in law enforcement, Rasmussen College has established the American Heroes Grant. One of the few programs of its kind designed specifically for the public safety professional, the Rasmussen College American Heroes Grant will offer 100 grants worth up to $2,500 each in direct tuition assistance to active duty local, state and federal law enforcement officers, professional firefighters and paramedics who enroll in any Rasmussen College degree program at any of its 22 campuses nationwide or online.
