SAN FRANCISCO, April 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In anticipation of an online auction of fine musical instruments including a 300 year old violin by Antonio Stradivari, the New York-based auction house Tarisio will hold a public exhibition at the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center on April 12 & 13.
Among the exhibited violins and bows will be the 'Baron von der Leyen' Stradivarius of c. 1705, named for an early owner of the instrument a 19th century German silk merchant. The violin has been in private hands for nearly half a century. Read more about this violin at tarisio.com/baronvonderleyen.
Jason Price, Director of Tarisio, said, "There are only 600 or so Stradivari in existence and only a handful of these come up for sale every year." He adds, "This is an extraordinary opportunity to see an important and very valuable instrument up-close and in person."
Bidding on the 'Baron von der Leyen' will begin at $2 million. See a video of the 'Baron von der Leyen' being played at youtube.com/watch?v=wg02nh4Rnkc.
Exhibition hours are 12pm-7pm on Thursday, April 12, and 10am-7pm on Friday, April 13 at the San Francisco War Memorial & Performing Arts Center, in the Green Room, at 401 Van Ness Avenue.

The auction will be held on Wednesday, April 25 & Thursday, April 26 at tarisio.com.
Tarisio rose to prominence among musicians and collectors in 2003 after auctioning instruments and memorabilia from the estate of the late maestro Isaac Stern, the famous violinist and San Francisco native.
