The team brings more than 65 years of combined experience to Range Networks in the telecommunication, engineering and radio communication industries, and is focused on delivering products that advance the future of cellular networks with the only complete commercial open source cellular system.
"There are at least a billion people in the world today without access to telephone service of any kind because they cannot be served cost-effectively with existing technologies," said Burgess. "Our executive management team is focused on delivering a solution that provides rural communities, remote outposts and emergency responders with the power and flexibility of a fully integrated cellular system, built on open source software that drastically reduces implementation and maintenance costs."
Since 2008, Burgess and Samra have worked together to develop the OpenBTS Project, an open source software defined radio implementation of the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) radio access network that presents normal GSM handsets as virtual SIP endpoints. Through this collaboration, Range Networks has developed a unique American-made solution for trustworthy cellular networks.
"The combination of the ubiquitous GSM air interface with VoIP backhaul, forms the basis of a new kind of cellular network that can be installed and operated at about 1/10 the cost of current technologies," said Samra. "We are excited to introduce this new technology and bring a new vision to the cellular world."
Burgess and Samra, are joined by Faith Sedlin and Stephen Wullschleger. Sedlin has built, launched and grown several successful companies. She brings 20 years of experience to the team and most recently was the CMO of Siri prior to the app being purchased by Apple. She was also co-founder and CMO for Oodle, the pioneer of social classifieds sites purchased by QVC.
As vice president of global services, Wullschleger will be responsible for all aspects of customer care and delivery including production, professional service, and customer support. He brings more than twenty years of industry experience in IT, high tech and telecommunications. Prior to Range Networks, he was director of global services for Savi Technology, a division of Lockheed Martin and spent twelve years at KPMG Consulting.
