WASHINGTON, July 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being released by the Falun Dafa Information Center:
Members of Congress and human rights activists will join hundreds of Falun Gong practitioners to call for an end to the torture, imprisonment, and killing of Falun Gong adherents by the Chinese communist party.
Falun Gong is a traditional Chinese spiritual discipline of the Buddhist school. It consists of gentle meditation and exercises -- which resemble Tai-chi or Yoga -- and a moral philosophy based on truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. The practice attracted tens of millions of practitioners in China in the 1990s.
Due to its popularity, the Communist Party leadership viewed Falun Gong as ideological competition. On July 20th, 1999, the Communist Party launched a campaign to "eradicate" Falun Gong.
Since then, over 3,400 Falun Gong practitioners have been killed as a result of torture and abuse in police custody. Hundreds of thousands have been imprisoned extra-judicially for their belief in Falun Gong, and millions have been subjected to systematic discrimination and harassment for their spiritual faith.
We hope you will join us to mark the 11th year of persecution in China, and call for an end to human rights abuses against Falun Gong.
