Radioplayer's Meaning-Based Search Box Goes Live
Autonomy Powers Search In The Cloud Across Hundreds of UK Radio Stations
CAMBRIDGE, England and SAN FRANCISCO, May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU. or AU.L), a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that Radioplayer, the online console offering hundreds of UK radio stations in one place, is using Autonomy's meaning-based search technology. Radioplayer selected Autonomy's cornerstone product, IDOL (Intelligent Data Operating Layer) to process the live metadata of over 200 radio stations in the cloud, giving listeners a revolutionary, cross-industry, conceptual search function.
In a ground-breaking partnership between the BBC and commercial radio, Radioplayer represents a pan-industry world-first by bringing radio together online in one place. Radioplayer users can now take advantage of a search facility that spans across hundreds of radio stations, united in recognizing Autonomy as the best-of-bred technology partner for internet radio in the UK. Autonomy's IDOL understands the very concepts of search terms and indexed material, in order to deliver the most relevant results, whether the user is looking for a station, programme, location, presenter or topic. On-demand programmes, 'listen again' and commercial podcasts are also searchable.
Autonomy, which owns the world's largest private cloud, managing over 17 Petabytes of data, on 6,500 servers in 8 data centers around the world, is an expert in cloud computing applications. The IDOL engine takes the geographical location of both users and content into account to generate relevant and timely search results. This meaning-based approach to cloud computing delivers an optimal experience for listeners, who use Radioplayer to quickly find the audio material they want from a whole host of different radio stations and platforms, without having to trawl through pages of search results, on different websites.
"Radioplayer unites radio content on one platform for the first time, demonstrating our industry's commitment to its digital future," said Michael Hill, Managing Director, UK Radioplayer Ltd. "Crucial to the success of this venture has been an intelligent search facility, from Autonomy, that allow users to easily navigate and retrieve this audio content, making online listening accessible, intuitive and simple."
"We are delighted to see Radioplayer up and running so quickly, applying meaning-based technology to radio in order to deliver a quality experience to listeners across the country," commented Ian Black, Head of Global Operations, Autonomy. "This is a great example of Autonomy's market-leading audio processing in the cloud, enabling an industry-first search function that will help boost radio in the UK, as listeners are provided with an effortless and enjoyable way to tune in online."
Radioplayer uses IDOL to support around 4 million users per week, putting listeners in control through an easy-to-use console. Through Autonomy, listeners use Radioplayer to search and enjoy radio content from all BBC national and local stations and commercial radio, including Global's Capital and Heart networks, GMG's Smooth Radio and Absolute Radio, as well as stations owned by Bauer Media and UTV Media.
