SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., March 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- "In Your Right Mind," a weekly radio program that features in-depth roundtable discussions of today's leading behavioral health headlines, aired an informative show "The Craving Mind," this past Sunday, March 11, at 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on Talk Radio 790 AM KABC Los Angeles. The broadcast discusses the development of bad habits and addictions in the human brain, and how mindfulness and other training strategies are helpful in overcoming these issues. The show is hosted by Tonmoy Sharma, M.B.B.S., M.Sc., founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sovereign Health, who provides an in-depth medical and clinical expertise, and co-host Stefanie Wilder-Taylor.
This Sunday's guest is Judson Brewer, M.D., Ph.D., a psychiatrist and internationally acclaimed expert in mindfulness training for addictions. He is also the director of research at the Center for Mindfulness and an associate professor in medicine and psychiatry at University of Massachusetts (UMass) Medical School. Dr. Brewer has developed and tested novel mindfulness programs for habit change, including both in-person and app-based treatments. He has also studied the underlying neural mechanisms of mindfulness using standard and real-time fMRI.
Habits are a normal part of life, and are often helpful. However, this can also set up potentially addictive behaviors, such as drinking too much, smoking, overeating, gambling or even compulsive use of computers and social media.
"People are vulnerable to developing some bad habits and some of them may even develop into an addiction. These routines can become hardwired in human brains and the reward centers keep us craving for such things, which are so hard to resist," says Dr. Sharma.
Even though, we know that certain behaviors are harmful to us then why is it so difficult to stop? To know what happens in our brains as habits form and how mindfulness can help us to overcome bad habits, or for those who are interested in listening to past show, episodes of "In Your Right Mind" shows are available on iTunes or on demand.
