/R E P E A T -- Minister Leitch reaffirms commitment to building strong workplaces/
OTTAWA, Aug. 30, 2013 /CNW/ - Every year, on the first Monday of September, Canadians mark Labour Day, where we pay tribute to the important contribution Canadian workers make to our society's progress and economic well-being.
For over 100 years, our country has celebrated Labour Day and what it represents - a long-standing tradition among the Canadian workforce that values workers' rights, safety and equality.
Just as our government remains focused on jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity, we want to ensure that all Canadians return home safely after work and that they have employment opportunities that are based solely on their skills and abilities.
Fair and safe workplaces are productive workplaces that contribute to a strong and prosperous economy. Much of Canada's success in this area is a result of cooperation between government, employers and employees. As the new Minister of Labour, I look forward to continuing this tradition of promoting positive labour management relations.
I want to wish all Canadians an enjoyable Labour Day.
The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch P.C., O.Ont.
MP, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women
