Qualcomm Innovation Center Launches AllJoyn Open Source Project
— Designed to Expand the Use of Ad-Hoc, Proximity-Based Connectivity within Wireless Apps —
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc. (QuIC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), today announced the launch of the AllJoyn™ open source project, which is a peer-to-peer technology framework that enables ad-hoc, proximity-based, device-to-device communication without the use of an intermediary server. AllJoyn is designed to easily allow developers to create apps and services that leverage P2P connectivity, which can be established using any short-range radio link such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth™, on any AllJoyn-enabled device without the need for a 3G network or Wi-Fi Internet access point.
AllJoyn is designed to solve many of the complexities that currently exist in the peer-to-peer space; for example, the technology addresses transparent device and service discovery, networking functionality, message routing and also provides a security framework for encrypted and authenticated communications. By simplifying how devices connect and interact, AllJoyn allows for a superior user experience with easy discovery among devices, simplified group formation and low latency, regardless of how the wireless connection is established.
"QuIC is excited to launch the AllJoyn open source project with the hope that it will drive innovation and creativity by empowering developers and device manufacturers to create new types of user experiences that expand the use of peer-to-peer technology beyond just traditional wireless handsets," said Rob Chandhok, president of Qualcomm Innovation Center, Inc. "AllJoyn technology has the ability to help mainstream proximity-based P2P connectivity and we look forward to the industry participating in this open source project to help us evolve the technology."
Using the AllJoyn SDK, developers are able to enhance their apps and services by integrating P2P functionality, providing manufacturers the opportunity to differentiate their consumer offering. In addition, the technology is designed to be platform independent and open source, presenting developers with a potentially large addressable device ecosystem. Potential applications of the technology could include peer-to-peer gaming, secure file sharing, extended set-top box functionality or in-vehicle infotainment.
QuIC will demonstrate AllJoyn P2P technology at GSMA's Mobile World Congress in the Company's exhibit, located in Exhibit Hall 8, #8B53. Those who wish to contribute to the AllJoyn source code or download the AllJoyn SDK can do so at www.alljoyn.org. The source code for the AllJoyn open source project and the associated binary SDK are available under the Apache License Version 2.0.
