VERO BEACH, Fla., Oct. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- QOL Medical LLC, a rare-disease pharmaceutical company, today announced it is introducing "Candy the GSID Elf" at the 2017 North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition conference (NASPGHAN) held November 2nd and 3rd in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Millions of parents participate in the holiday "Elf on a Shelf" tradition each year, "so we thought it would be a fun, educational opportunity to raise awareness for GSID (Genetic Sucrase-Isomaltase Deficiency)," said QOL's Vice President of Marketing, Anthony D'Elia. GSID, informally known as sucrose intolerance, is an often-misdiagnosed GI condition that affects infants, children, teens, and adults.
"Candy the GSID Elf" won't be on a shelf, but more appropriately will be sitting on top of his toilet, welcoming NASPGHAN attendees with a fun photo opportunity and disease-specific information. "Since we're entering the holiday season, the timing is perfect to take a video or photo of yourself with a real-live elf and share Candy's message about GSID," D'Elia said.
About GSID
GSID, also known as Congenital Sucrase-Isomaltase Deficiency, is a rare disorder that affects a person's ability to digest certain sugars due to absent or low levels of two digestive enzymes, sucrase and isomaltase. Sucrase and isomaltase are involved in the digestion of sugar and starch. Sucrase, an enzyme produced in the small intestine, aids in the breakdown of sucrose (table sugar) into glucose and fructose, which are used by the body as fuel. Isomaltase is one of several enzymes that helps digest starches. Failure to absorb dietary sucrose and starch may impact the absorption of other nutrients and the hormonal regulation of gastrointestinal function. Patients with GSID are at risk for chronic malnutrition; indeed, failure to thrive is one of the characteristics of the disease state. In addition to diarrhea, some patients suffer from gassiness, abdominal distention, and pain. Learn more at www.sucroseintolerance.com.
