Q30 Innovations Wins MIT Award for Product Innovation
Q30 Innovations Q-Collar Earns Alpha Award for Best Analytics Innovation/Technology at 11th Annual MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference
WESTPORT, Conn., March 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Q30 Innovations today announced it has won the 2017 Alpha Award for Best Analytics Innovation/Technology for its Q-Collar – a novel device designed to mitigate the dangers of concussive blows. The award was presented by the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference (SSAC) advisory board, whose Alpha Awards recognize achievements in sports analytics and innovation.
The Q-Collar, which employs the body's own physiology to create a bubble-wrap effect for the brain, is being developed by Q30 Innovations for athletes, soldiers and industrial workers. It gently compresses the jugular vein to mildly increase blood volume in the cranium, creating a "tighter fit" of the brain inside the skull. This action is proposed to reduce "slosh" – i.e., the twisting and slamming of the brain against the skull's interior walls, which is one cause of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), or concussion.
For more than five years, Q30 has been focused on the development of the Q-Collar to reduce the risk and severity of brain injury suffered by athletes and military personnel who are at risk.
"The Alpha Award for Best Analytics Innovation/Technology is a tremendous honor that goes to the heart of how the Q-Collar was conceived – a blend of eureka moments and painstaking R&D," said Tom Hoey, co-CEO of Q30 Innovations. "We won't stop until every athlete has the opportunity to reduce their chances of mild traumatic brain injury in sports and beyond."
The Q-Collar was the centerpiece of two scientific studies published in 2016 that showed early evidence it may reduce brain injuries in high-school football and hockey players. The studies, performed by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, constituted the first evidence of the effectiveness of the collar on human subjects.
The 11th annual SSAC was hosted by the MIT Sloan School of Management at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Mass., attracting a number of leaders in the sports technology industry as well as major sponsors including Rebook, SAP, Intel, and lead sponsor ESPN.
