LOS ANGELES, Oct. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, more than 400 PwC US partners and staff throughout Los Angeles are coming together with local students and Playworks to teach financial literacy skills to 4,000 elementary students. The effort is part of PwC's Earn Your Future, a $160 million, multi-year investment centered on two goals: helping youth develop critical financial skills and providing educators with the resources and training to teach those skills.
"PwC recognizes the need to invest in a future workforce that is fiscally, environmentally and socially aware, and through Earn Your Future we aim to help prepare the nation's youth as they transition from school to a career," said Brian Cullinan, managing partner of PwC's Greater Southern California Market. "For this year's Community Day, we're sending our partners and staff to teach financial literacy lessons at elementary schools across our great community. By combining educational resources with trained professionals, we hope to be a powerful force for change in Los Angeles and beyond."
Working in 10 elementary schools across Los Angeles, PwC volunteers will use Earn Your Future curricula to teach financial literacy lessons on monetary concepts such as savings and investments, credit and borrowing, income, taxes, as well as career planning. As part of the program, students will learn how to start saving for short-term and long term goals. This lesson will include the development of a savings plan and timetable for achieving specific short or long-term goals (such as purchasing a bike), including ways for the students to earn money and reduce their expenses.
Since its inception in June 2012, Earn Your Future has sparked scaled change and increased engagement in every PwC market across the US firm. More than 27,000 active and retired partners and staff have given 425,000 hours of time to youth since the launch of the commitment. Cumulatively, our people have made a measurable impact on more than 1.1 million students and 41,000 educators by providing educational, financial and/or developmental resources. Additionally, PwC has donated $43 million to support youth related causes over the past two years. PwC Los Angeles employees have invested more than 19,000 hours to local charitable organizations this year alone.
