SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn., Nov. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company, today announced the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) in Diamond Bar, Calif., will install a PureCell® System Model 400 fuel cell to power its headquarters. AQMD, the air pollution control agency for all of Orange County, Calif., and the urban portions of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, is a repeat customer for UTC Power. In 1994, the AQMD installed a PureCell System Model 200, which ran for more than 50,000 hours.

"Stationary fuel cells are one of the cleanest and most efficient ways to produce electricity for building needs," said Barry R. Wallerstein, AQMD's Executive Officer. "This fuel cell system will provide about 22 percent of AQMD's daily electrical needs and is part of our energy self-sufficiency effort."
The PureCell system is a proven solution to today's energy challenges and is already in use at facilities across multiple industries. Generating power and heat, the PureCell system is driving an excellent return on investment for businesses, lowering energy costs, increasing energy security and reducing emissions. This PureCell system installation will provide 400 kW of power to the AQMD headquarters building, which houses a variety of offices. Additionally, thermal energy from the fuel cell will be harnessed to provide space heating and reheating for the air conditioning system.
"We are very pleased that once again the South Coast Air Quality Management District has chosen UTC Power to help meet its energy needs," said Joe Triompo, vice president and general manager of UTC Power. "With the upgrade to a Model 400 system, the majority of the energy required for AQMD's headquarters will now be supplied by clean and efficient sources. AQMD continues to lead by example and this installation will be a model for the many businesses in the areas served by AQMD."
The PureCell system is a long-term solution with a 10-year stack life and total expected energy efficiencies more than double those of traditional power sources. When the efficient design, positive ROI, and world-class 96 percent fleet availability are factored in, the PureCell system is the recommended choice for facilities with baseload power requirements, like AQMD headquarters. This range of benefits is unique to the PureCell system and is unmatched in the fuel cell industry.
UTC Power will provide energy from the fuel cell to AQMD under an Energy Supply and Services Agreement. The project is supported by funding from California's Self-Generation Incentive program (SGIP) and the unit is expected to be installed and operational in mid-2013.
