AstraZeneca PLC (ADR) Research Reports
On September 8, 2014, AstraZeneca PLC (AstraZeneca) announced that detailed results and safety data from a Phase IIa study evaluating its novel investigational monoclonal antibody benralizumab in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine. According to the Company, the aforesaid study was conducted by MedImmune - AstraZeneca's global biologics research and development arm - which evaluated the safety and efficacy of benralizumab in 101 adults with moderate-to-severe COPD and experiencing at least one acute exacerbation requiring oral corticosteroids, antibiotics, or hospitalisation in the past year. The Company informed that since benralizumab did not reduce the acute exacerbation rate compared with placebo in the overall patient population, the primary endpoint in the study was not met. However, in the pre-specified analyses, the study indicated that benralizumab reduced COPD exacerbations and improved other symptoms of COPD in certain patient groups. PPL Corporation Research Reports
On September 6, 2014, PPL Corporation (PPL Corp.) reported that operators at its Susquehanna nuclear power plant have disconnected Unit 2 from the regional electric grid for a turbine inspection, on the same day. According to the Company, the shutdown at the unit was initiated after data from the extensive vibration monitoring equipment installed on the turbine indicated development of small cracks in a few turbine blades. Timothy S. Rausch, PPL Susquehanna Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer, said, "Our decision to shut down Unit 2 at this time, based on the vibration data, reflects our continuing commitment to the plant's long-term safety and reliability." After installing newly designed blades on the Unit 1 turbine in early 2014, PPL Susquehanna LLC - one of PPL Corp.'s generating affiliates - is planning to install similar blades during the next scheduled Unit 2 refueling and maintenance outage in the spring of 2015 in order to reduce vibration, which is believed to be a primary contributor to cracking.
