PUBLICATION ADVISORY: BJS Releases Justice Assistance Grant Program, 2016

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) released Justice Assistance Grant Program, 2016, which describes the steps used in the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) formula calculation process and presents summary results of the fiscal year (FY) 2016 formula calculations. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005 merged two grant programs to establish the JAG program. The Bureau of Justice Assistance administers the program, and the Bureau of Justice Statistics calculates the formulas. Funds are distributed to states and localities based on resident population and violent crime data reported to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program. Approximately $274.9 million was allocated for the FY 2016 JAG awards.

Mason, provides federal leadership in developing the nation's capacity to prevent and control crime, administer justice, and assist victims.
