Background: Within seven years of its public introduction in 1992, Falun Gong spread by word of mouth to 100 million people, who experienced firsthand its health and spiritual benefits. Then, on July 20, 1999, the Communist Party launched a crackdown to eradicate Falun Gong through a campaign of propaganda, mass imprisonment, torture, and other forms of coercive "reeducation" that have resulted in over 3,400 deaths. To this day, hundreds of thousands of Falun Gong practitioners are held extra-judicially in labor camps. In the first four months of 2011, there are 26 deaths of Falun Gong practitioners who were of all different ages and from all over China. Most died because of physical and psychiatric torture that is routinely used against practitioners in custody. Falun Gong practitioners have responded to state-sanctioned violence using entirely peaceful means, including a movement in China to disavow membership in Communist Party organizations (the number of participants in the movement is set to reach 100 million this summer), and to embrace hope for a free, peaceful future.
