Public Librarians May Be Eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, Notes Ameritech Financial
ROHNERT PARK, Calif., July 24, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Becoming a librarian can feel financially unreasonable because of student loans. Pursuing a master's degree in library and information sciences is practically a necessary step to achieving success in a library-related field. However, even though the degree is often considered a necessity, it does not guarantee a job. It often does guarantee student loan debt. Some librarians may feel that their starting salary is not enough to lessen the weight of their debt. For this reason, many feel there is no other choice than to look for alternate career paths in order to pay the bills. This decision can lower the chances of obtaining a librarian position at all. Librarians may not need to settle for a well-paying job irrelevant to their future desires; all many may need is the right student loan repayment plan, says Ameritech Financial, a document preparation company.
"Anyone who wants to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful deserves the chance to pursue that goal," says Tom Knickerbocker, executive vice president of Ameritech Financial. "Student loans can make many professionals who want to do good work feel like they are on the wrong career path instead of the wrong student loan repayment plan."
If a library professional is recognized as performing a public good, they may be able to pursue Public Loan Forgiveness Program (PLFS) in order to obtain loan forgiveness in 10 years. While this plan seems simple enough, most applicants have had trouble due to needing to be on the right loan, the right plan or paying the loan back in the right way.
In order to be enrolled in PLFS, members must apply to an income-driven repayment plan (IDR). Ameritech Financial can help borrowers find the right IDR to suit their needs, and Ameritech Financial's document preparation services can help complete necessary paperwork to follow the strict PLFS requirements. If a borrower isn't eligible for PLFS, then many IDR plans result in loan forgiveness after 20 to 25 years, and may only cost 10 to 15 percent of a borrower's discretionary income during that time. If a person's goals ever change, then Ameritech Financial can help re-certify the necessary documents, and make sure they are ready to fit a borrower's needs.
"When the problem of student loans is significantly reduced, borrowers can hopefully feel more content in pursuing the path that is right for them," said Knickerbocker. "Ameritech Financial wants to help a borrower to feel confident that they have chosen the correct repayment plan to pursue the life and career that they desire without having to be held back as much by student loans."
