RESTON, Va. and LOME, Togo, April 27, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Public Interest Registry, the nonprofit operator of the .org, .ngo and .ong domains, will sponsor Leading Youth, Sport & Development's (LYSD) fourth annual Basket Promotion Week in Togo, Africa. LYSD, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that aims to leverage sports and education to empower communities in West Africa, will host a series of youth basketball training camps, tournaments and court renovations across Togo for upwards of 500 youth participants.
"Public Interest Registry's mission is to provide platforms that empower other people's voices and support activities that have social impact. Last year we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the first .org domain registration, which has grown to more than 10 million unique domains today driven by a diverse community of organizations that are committed to driving positive change," said Brian Cute, CEO of Public Interest Registry. "The stories of how LYSD is using basketball to impact the lives of youth in West Africa and transcend societal barriers are truly inspiring and we're proud to help further promote this cause."
This year's Basketball Promotion Week, which coincides with Togo's Independence Day holiday, will also feature a national U17 tournament and basketball camp in Lome where four players will be selected for the NBA's West Africa Development Camp to be held in June. Public Interest Registry's sponsorship will cover the renovation costs of a basketball court in Aneho as well as transporting participating children and sports equipment from Benin to the basketball camp and youth games in Lome.
"Basketball can truly be a universal catalyst for change. By reinforcing perseverance, self-esteem and relationships with others, our mission with Basketball Promotion Week is to break down societal and economic barriers to demonstrate to youth across Africa that determination can help them overcome many challenges," said LYSD chairman and co-founder Jean-Luc Agboyibo. "With the support of partners like Public Interest Registry, we're able to show how sports and education can empower African youth and lead to economic and social growth."
