Pryor Cashman Adds Leading Attorneys Dan Kurtz and Shveta Kakar Creating New Nonprofit Practice
NEW YORK, May 5, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pryor Cashman LLP is pleased to announce the addition of Dan Kurtz and Shveta Kakar as partners to the firm's newly established Nonprofit + Tax-Exempt Organizations practice. With diverse backgrounds and an impressive client roster, much of their work will also cross over into the Corporate, Tax and Litigation areas. Based in New York, Kurtz and Kakar join the firm from Davis Wright Tremaine. Their arrival comes directly on the heels of last week's announcement of partner E. Scott Schirick to the firm's White Collar Defense & Investigations group.
"The addition of Dan and Shveta to our firm establishes a new practice area that is preeminent in the field. We are proud to have their clients join our roster and for our firm to serve so many who are doing so much good in our City and elsewhere. We are confident that the full array of legal services that we can offer these clients will likewise serve them well. The addition of this practice area not only complements our other practices, but furthers our efforts to make Pryor Cashman truly a premier full-service firm," said Ronald H. Shechtman, Pryor Cashman's managing partner.
With his varied background as a corporate lawyer, civil prosecutor and leading governance authority, Kurtz has developed a national reputation serving the full range of needs of his nonprofit clients, some of which include: Alcoholics Anonymous World Services Inc., American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), Campaign Finance Institute, Carnegie Hall, City University of New York, The Doe Fund, The Grace Institute, Grolier Club of New York, Hadassah, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Lincoln Center, National September 11 Memorial & Museum, New-York Historical Society, St. Bernard's School, Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Art Gallery, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, UJA-Federation, among others.
Kurtz acts as general counsel to many of his clients and as a principal outside counsel to others. In those capacities, he advises clients on corporate and governance issues; sponsorship and charitable fundraising opportunities; endowment administration and investment; indemnification; charitable solicitation laws and a full range of exempt organization tax issues. Kurtz also regularly handles business combinations, including joint ventures, sales of assets, mergers, consolidations and sophisticated reorganizations and restructurings. Kurtz also represents nonprofit clients in litigation matters, in particular those involving issues of governance and fiduciary responsibility. He has conducted numerous internal investigations and litigations undertaken by civil enforcement and regulatory authorities, and has played a key role in many groundbreaking cases in this area.
"It is with great pleasure and excitement that we join Pryor Cashman. The firm has a leading reputation as a general service powerhouse that includes key practices like Labor & Employment, Intellectual Property, Real Estate and other significant areas that are important to our clients," said Kurtz.
