Proventix joins health care facilities in celebrating Patient Safety Awareness Week.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Proventix Systems, Inc., a RFID technology company of Birmingham, AL today joins health care facilities in celebrating and recognizing Patient Safety Awareness Week, an annual healthcare safety campaign led by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF). Proventix continues its commitment to improve the safety of patients by helping to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) with the nGage™ automated hand-hygiene monitoring system.
Hand hygiene compliance is paramount in the fight against HAIs, and Proventix's nGage system assists clients in demonstrating clinical excellence by recording hand hygiene events and using that data to assure adherence to the highest standards of patient care. When adherence is successfully managed and compliance increases, this ultimately increases the safety of the patient.
The theme of this year's Patient Safety Awareness Week is Patient Safety 7/365: 7 days of recognition, 365 days of commitment to safe care. Proventix shares in both this year's theme and the vision of the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Five Moments for Hand Hygiene campaign. Through continuous, 24/7 automated hand-hygiene monitoring, nGage allows Proventix to be a patient advocate within client hospitals to encourage hand cleansing excellence at these important moments.
Proventix's clients share their dedication to putting patients first. Because of that commitment to patient safety and hand hygiene, Proventix has captured approximately 23.5 million hand washing events and 537,456 hours of combined, continuous monitoring. Proventix clients experience an average 105.6% increase in hand hygiene solution dispenses and an average HAI reduction of over 24%.
Increasing hand hygiene compliance by addressing compliance concerns in a hospital is achievable; however, leadership must overcome the challenge of motivating caregivers to improve hand hygiene adherence. Once these challenges are addressed, HAIs decrease and the positive effect on patient safety and financial outcomes is undeniable. HAIs are responsible for thousands of lives and millions of dollars lost every year. While care for patients with HAIs only accounts for 4.03% of all care delivered, the costs associated with their treatment make up 79% of net losses. Additionally, for each HAI that occurs, hospital costs increase by $20,549.
In a study on one hospital unit, Proventix's nGage system was used to measure hand-hygiene solution dispensing and hand-hygiene compliance rates, which was then compared to infection rates. A six week baseline period and subsequent six week follow-up period showed a 188.4% total increase in both soap and sanitizer dispensing. The unit also saw a hand-hygiene compliance increase of 14.5% and a 62.5% decrease in nosocomial infection markers. This reduction equates to a total direct cost savings of $83,445, a bottom line improvement of $79,965 and 96.8 days length of stay avoided. For additional articles and studies, visit our news page.
Proventix is proud of the results our clients are achieving. Infection Prevention and Quality teams from eight hospitals will present results achieved through their use of the nGage system at the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) 2013 Annual Conference.
